Why use Cloudflare? 8 reasons for your business website

Why use Cloudflare? Because it makes a business website faster and safer, and most of what a small business needs is on the free plan. It sits between your website and your visitors, so it can serve pages from nearby and block bad traffic before it reaches your server.

Below are the eight reasons we see matter most for small and medium South African businesses, plus the cases where Cloudflare may not be the right fit. Every feature and limit comes from Cloudflare's own pages, checked on 26 October 2026.

Short answer

  • Speed: pages are served from a data centre close to each visitor, including Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
  • Security: DDoS protection, a firewall and bot filtering are included on the free plan.
  • Free SSL: the padlock certificate is free and renews itself.
  • Less spam: a free tool stops bots filling in your contact forms.
  • Useful extras: free website stats, email forwarding and secure staff access.
  • Room to grow: the same account can host apps and APIs later.

1. Faster pages for your visitors

Cloudflare runs a network of data centres in 348 cities, and says 95% of internet users are within 50 milliseconds of one. Three of those cities are in South Africa: Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

Cloudflare keeps copies of your images, styles and scripts in those data centres. A visitor in Durban gets them from Durban rather than from a server overseas, so pages load faster. Speed matters for both visitors and search rankings, which is why we look at it on every web development project.

2. DDoS protection on every plan

A DDoS attack floods a website with fake traffic until it falls over. Cloudflare includes unmetered DDoS protection on all plans, free included, and it works automatically.

Cloudflare's billing also excludes attack traffic from your usage. You won't get a bigger bill because someone attacked your site.

3. A free SSL certificate that renews itself

Browsers mark sites without SSL as "not secure", and visitors notice. Cloudflare gives you a free SSL certificate, so your site shows the padlock and loads over HTTPS.

The certificate renews automatically. Nobody has to remember an expiry date, and you avoid the outage an expired certificate can cause.

4. A firewall that blocks common attacks

The free plan includes a web application firewall (WAF) with Cloudflare's Free Managed Ruleset. It blocks well-known attacks on websites before they reach your server.

This is especially useful for WordPress sites, which are a common target for automated attacks. Paid plans add more rules and better bot protection if you need them.

5. Less spam from your contact forms

Spam form submissions waste time and can hide real enquiries. Cloudflare Turnstile is a free replacement for the "click all the traffic lights" puzzles.

Most real visitors never see a puzzle at all. The free plan allows unlimited checks and up to 20 widgets, which covers most business sites.

6. Your server stays hidden

With Cloudflare in front, visitors connect to Cloudflare, not straight to your server. That makes it harder for attackers to find and target the server itself.

For systems you host yourself, such as an office server or an internal tool, Cloudflare Tunnel goes further. It needs no public IP address and no open inbound ports on your firewall, and it is available on all plans.

7. Free extras most businesses can use

Website stats without tracking people

Cloudflare Web Analytics is free and, according to Cloudflare, does not collect your visitors' personal data. It shows visits, top pages and how fast pages load for real visitors.

Email forwarding for your domain

Email Routing forwards addresses like info @ yourbusiness.co.za to an inbox you already use, at no cost. It forwards only; it is not a full mailbox.

Secure access for staff

Cloudflare Zero Trust lets staff reach internal tools without a traditional VPN. Cloudflare offers it free for up to 50 users.

Domains at cost

Cloudflare Registrar charges only what the domain registry charges, with no markup. Not every domain extension is supported, so check yours in Cloudflare's domain search first.

8. Room to grow beyond a website

The same Cloudflare account can run apps, APIs and whole websites on Cloudflare Workers. The free plan includes 100,000 requests a day, and requests for static files such as images are free and unlimited. Paid Workers plans start at USD 5 a month.

This means you can start with a simple site and add online forms, booking tools or an API later without moving to a new provider. We cover this kind of work under Cloud & DevOps.

When Cloudflare may not be the right fit

Cloudflare is a good default, but it isn't perfect for everyone.

  • You need to change your DNS. On most plans, your domain's nameservers must point to Cloudflare. A careless switch can take email or parts of a site offline, so check every record first.
  • Caching needs care. Wrong settings can show old content or cache pages that should be private, such as a logged-in account page.
  • Free support is limited. The free plan comes with community forums and documentation, not support tickets.
  • It is another link in the chain. Cloudflare has had wide outages, such as on 18 November 2025 (opens in a new window). When it is down, sites behind it can be too.

Which Cloudflare setup should you choose?
