The Low Down:
Acting as a follow-up post on Blogging in South Africa, we will go through some International and Local Affiliate Programs and Agencies who can either point you in the right direction, or can help you directly in monetizing your website.
International Affiliate Programs:
There are quite a few affiliate programs/networks out there today, but we will go through some of the most used, and more popular ones that are active today.
- Google AdSense:
Google has an program called AdSense, which basically acts as an affiliate program. AdSense is extremely easy to sign up for, and equally easy to implement. You can start making dollars within hours of signing up. Google’s AdSense is available to South Africans, and you can choose the currency in which you want to be paid – dollars or rands – your choice.
AzoogleAds is a performance-based online advertising network that delivers both amazing results for its Advertisers and easy to manage and highly profitable revenue stream for its publishers. The AzoogleAds Publisher Network is currently only open to publishers in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Israel, Germany, Italy and Spain. Pity.
AdBrite’s aim is to provide their publishers with the most control, best service, and highest payout possible. AdBrite is available to South Africans.
- Commission Junction:
A ValueClick, Inc. Company, Commission Junction, enables publishers to maximize their revenue opportunities by developing sustainable relationships with top-tier advertisers. Commission Junction is available to South Africans, but you can only be paid in certain currencies.
eBay has a developers program for developers, affiliates, and entrepreneurs looking to build applications using eBay Web Services. Thus, they enable you to make money through your code, they way you want to! The eBay Developer Program is available to South Africans.
These are just a few of the many international affiliate programs out there. Test what works best for you and see which ones pay out the highest.
The Local Arena (South African Affiliate Programs):
Locally, only a few programs exist, as Affiliate Marketing in South Africa has only really taken off the last few years. Let’s list a few of them and discuss them as we go.
Often referred to as South Africa’s top affiliate network, OfferForge provides publishers with a network of competitive and exclusive Internet advertisers who want to promote their products and services through your websites and newsletters.
- Traffic Synergy:
TrafficSynergy is a dedicated and successful platform that brings together a wide range of high performance advertisers and marketers.
Nowadays, more and more companies offer direct affiliate programs. They would pay you a fee for “referring” customers,or clients their way. Start looking out for those Affiliate links in the Top-or-Bottom Navigation, you’ll see them!
Tracking is obviously one of the most important aspects of affiliate marketing. Not only because it can tell you which advertisers convert, and which ones don’t, but it can also tell you which advertising areas are converting best.
All affiliate programs offer some sort of back-end / reporting area where you can track the performance of the ads that you display. I suggest you use a external tracking tool hand-in-hand with this facility. A good tracking tool would be Google Analytics (and it’s free!).
There are plenty of Online Marketing Agencies who hook you up with direct advertisers. When taking this route, you still have to do thorough tracking and reporting to keep your advertisers happy, so don’t think this is an easy way out 😉
Here are a few of the Online Marketing Agencies in South Africa that can put you in touch with direct advertisers:
- Purple Cow Communications:
See their Online Media Planning page for more information.
- Internet Ad Sales:
See their Publishers page for more information.
Please remember, when monetizing your website, always try to avoid compromising the look-and-feel of your website, if your visitors feel alienated, or bombarded, they WILL leave – never to return.
